Psychotherapy Services for Depression:
"The world is round
and the place which may seem like the end
may also be only the beginning"
- Ivy Baker Priest
Life is an incredible journey. Life has ups and downs, trials and successes, tears and laughter. Sometimes, though, it doesn't feel as though there is a balancing of the tough times and the good times. Sometimes life starts to feel like a cycle of difficult and painful experiences with no end in sight. In these times we often struggle to reach out for help. We may feel guilty or "bad" for having a hard time or choose to numb out through the use of alcohol, drugs, food, or self-injury.
Life is an incredible journey. Life is meant to be lived fully, freely, and passionately. Sometimes, though, life seems to get in the way of our hopes and dreams, leaving us wondering "why?" and "why me?" Sometimes we seem to get in the way of our hopes and dreams, leaving us inquiring "what is wrong with me?" and "how could I?" When your day becomes filled with feelings of depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and/or guilt then your life will feel out of control. When your thoughts become driven by shame, regret, self-loathing, and helplessness your mind will feel unmanageable. Living in such chaos is not only unacceptable, it is unnecessary.
Life is an incredible journey.
How do you choose to experience your journey?
Peering into the unknown may feel overwhelming. Change can feel exhausting. Sometimes change, a different life, a more fulfilled life may even feel impossible. Behaviors and patterns often feel stuck and built into the core of who we are. The quicksand of depression, anxiety, hopelessness, resentment, grief, and anger may even feel comforting. The question posed, though, is how do you choose to experience your journey? Do you choose to merely survive, struggling through each day, barely breathing, and hoping for change? Or do you choose to be alive and to embrace each new day with energy or hope? Dr. Truitt chose to dedicate her life to assisting people in obtaining and living their incredible journey, their incredible life. If, as Lao Tzu stated, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step," then it is time to take the first step.

Did you know most people are never taught the tools to manage their emotions in a healthy way? Bottling up emotions and negative feelings is harmful but if we don't have the skills to explore them how can we be expected to do so? Instead survival mandates we find ways to process, deal with or make sense of what has hurt us often leading to the development of depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, and other ways of coping.
Did you know that we are socialized from a very young age not to ask for help? As children we may be stubbornly determined to do it all on our own or we may be afraid to be perceived as dumb or weak. These thought patterns follow us through our lives leaving us vulnerable in our darkest moments, alone and afloat, too scared to reach out. Asking for help is powerful. You don't have to be alone.

Did you know that we can't know what we do not know? On the surface this statement seems simple but how many of us carry guilt and shame for our behavior when, in truth, we were never taught that other more preferred reactions or chooses were available? We authentically can not make choices that we do not know exist. With the right skills the impossible will be possible!
Did you know that the brain processes physical pain and emotional pain in the exact same part of the brain? Self-injury is often the only mechanism through which a person can express how much emotional pain they are truly experiencing.
